Up for Sale: Gold Foil Flown Around the Moon on the Apollo 11 Lunar Flight
These gold foil fragments were part of the Apollo 11 thermal control system and flew to the moon and back on the outside of the command module, Columbia, orbiting the moon while astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin went to its surface

20th of July, 2019 will be the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 landing the first men on the surface of the moon. Commemorating this event, authentic pieces of the Apollo 11 spacecraft are being made available to collectors by a New Jersey company, HistoryByTheInch.com.

The Apollo 11 command module, Columbia, was covered with a thin gold foil, known as Kapton. This Kapton was part of its lifesaving thermal protection system. The command module was the part of the spacecraft that orbited the moon while the lunar lander, Eagle, went to the surface of the moon. This Kapton flew on the command module as part of the Apollo 11 mission, orbiting the moon while astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin went to its surface.

Each piece comes from the Kapton collection given to a NASA employee in 1969. They remained in his possession until his death and are now available to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing on July 20, 2019.

For sale on eBay, each Kapton fragment is housed in a round, one-inch diameter, clear plastic holder, which can be carefully opened into two parts. The Kapton fragment has been tacked to a white cardstock backing using a non-toxic glue stick and has then been placed in the plastic holder. Attached to a 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ certificate of authenticity, this Kapton is a true piece of American and space history, with a brief description of the historical nature of the flight and foil.

“People are always thrilled to hold a piece of history in their hands,” said Paul Hartunian, owner of HistoryByTheInch.com. “Now they can not only hold but own a piece of the Apollo 11 Columbia spacecraft that flew to the moon and back, which was the greatest adventure of mankind.”

Certificates are available online at eBay and retail for $39.95, plus $3.00 shipping.
